How to Use BoutR
BoutR is a scorekeeper for your Apple Watch. It keeps track of two sides at once. You can use it for a fencing bout, a tennis match, a game of mini golf, or anything else you want to count.
This page explains every button and every gesture in the app.
The Main Screen
When you open BoutR, you see one card. Each card is one bout. A bout is a single match or a single thing you are counting.
Here is what is on the card, from top to bottom:
- A padlock in the top-left corner. This locks and unlocks the card. (See Locking a Bout below.)
- The bout name at the top. When you start a new bout, the name is the date and time it was created.
- A position number in the top-right corner, such as "2/5." This means you are looking at bout 2 out of 5 bouts.
- Two large score buttons. The red button on the left is for one side. The green button on the right is for the other side. Each button shows that side's score. When the score is zero, the button shows a plus sign (+) instead.
- A small person icon under each score button. Tap the icon or the name below it to name that side.
- A small document icon between the two person icons. This opens the notes screen.
- The name of each side under each person icon. New sides are called "Left" and "Right" until you name them.
Keeping Score
To add a point
Tap the score button for that side. The number goes up by one.
To take a point back
Press and hold the score button for about half a second. A message appears asking if you want to take one point away from that side. Tap Decrement to take the point away. Tap the X button if you pressed by mistake.
You can only take a point back if the score is above zero. If the score is already zero, holding the button does nothing.
Good to know
Every point you add or take away is saved with the exact time. You can see this list later in the summary. (See Viewing a Summary below.)
Naming the Bout
- Tap the bout name at the top of the card.
- A screen opens where you can type or dictate a new name.
- Tap the X button to close the screen. Your new name is saved as soon as you type it.
Naming the Sides
- Tap the small person icon under the score button for that side, or tap the name below it. Either one opens the same screen.
- Type or dictate a name.
- Tap the X button to close the screen. The name is saved as you type.
The name appears under the person icon on the card.
Adding a Note
- Tap the small document icon below the score buttons, between the two person icons.
- A screen opens where you can type or dictate a note. It can be as long as you want.
- Tap the X button to close the screen. Your note is saved as you type.
When a bout has a note, the document icon looks filled in. When there is no note, the icon is just an outline.
Moving Between Bouts
Each bout is its own card, and the cards are stacked one above the other.
- Swipe up to go to the next bout (the newer one).
- Swipe down to go back to the previous bout (the older one).
- You can also turn the Digital Crown to move between bouts.
The position number in the top-right corner tells you where you are in the stack.
Starting a New Bout
Go to the newest bout (the last card in the stack). Then swipe up one more time. A brand-new bout appears.
A new bout starts with:
- The current date and time as its name
- Both scores at zero (both buttons show a plus sign)
- The sides named "Left" and "Right"
- No note
You do not need to save anything. The bout is saved on its own.
BoutR holds up to 10,000 bouts. If you ever reach that many, swiping up past the newest bout shows a notice instead of starting a new one, and you will need to delete some old bouts first.
Locking a Bout
Locking a bout stops you from changing it by accident. This is useful during a match, when a stray touch could change the score.
To lock
Tap the padlock in the top-left corner of the card. The padlock closes and turns yellow. The rest of the card fades a little to show it is locked.
While a bout is locked, you cannot:
- Add or take away points
- Change the bout name
- Change the side names
- Change the note
- Delete the bout
You can still view the summary and move to other bouts.
To unlock
Tap the closed padlock. The padlock opens and the card returns to normal. Everything works again.
Viewing a Summary
Swipe right on a card. A summary screen opens as plain text. It shows:
- The bout name
- The score for each side
- When the bout was created
- The note, if there is one
- Every point in order, with the time it happened and which side scored it
Tap the X button to close the summary. You can view the summary even when the bout is locked.
Getting the Summary onto Your Phone
BoutR can show the summary as a QR code, so you can copy it to a phone without typing it out.
- Swipe right on the card to open the summary.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap the QR button.
- The watch fills its screen with a black-and-white QR code.
- Point your phone's camera at the watch. Your phone offers the summary text, which you can then copy, message, or paste wherever you like.
- Touch the watch screen anywhere to close the code and go back to the summary.
The code holds exactly what the summary screen shows — the same names, scores, times and note.
A few things help the scan:
- Hold the phone steady and fairly close, and give it a second to focus.
- A long note makes a code with more, smaller squares, which is harder for a camera to read. Shorter notes scan more easily.
- If a summary is far too long for a QR code — a note of a few thousand characters — BoutR says so instead of showing a code you could not scan.
Deleting a Bout
- Swipe left on the card. A red trash can appears.
- Let go. A message asks, "Delete this bout?"
- Tap Delete to remove it. Tap the X button to keep it.
Once you delete a bout, it is gone for good. There is no way to get it back.
If the bout is locked, you cannot delete it. When you swipe left on a locked bout, the trash can appears crossed out and gray. Unlock the bout first if you really want to delete it.
After you delete a bout, the app shows you the newest bout that is left. If you delete the only bout, the app creates a fresh, empty one for you. There is always at least one bout on screen.
Taps You Can Feel
BoutR taps your wrist as you use it, so you can tell what happened without looking closely:
- A buzz when a score goes up
- A click when you lock a card
- A light tap as you move from one bout to the next
There is nothing to set up, and nothing to turn on.
How Your Data Is Stored
Everything you enter is saved on the watch right away. You never need to press a save button.
Your bouts are stored only on your Apple Watch. Please keep these things in mind:
- BoutR does not sync your bouts to an iPhone or to iCloud.
- BoutR does not back up or export your bouts.
- If you delete the app, all of your bouts are deleted with it.
The QR code is the one way to get a bout off the watch, and it copies the text of a single summary — it is not a backup.
BoutR is meant for fun and casual use. Do not rely on it as an official record.
